However, the difference is that the two genetically different types of tissue may originate from the same zygote in which a mutation occurred during regular cell division. The most common plant chimaeras are variegated plants with the mutation in meristematic tissue, resulting in mutated tissues with no chloroplasts and no photosynthetic ability, relying on the normal, green, photosynthesizing plant tissue to keep the plant alive.

This is due to the crushing tooth plates and their flapping form of locomotion.

In fact, many holocephalans look like weird mashups of several different terrestrial creatures. Hence the term “chimera”!
